Beyond Good And Evil 2 Starts External Playtesting

Following its insanely impressive reveal at E3 in 2017, information surrounding Beyond Good and Evil 2 was at a standstill. Rumors and speculation have said that the project has been in trouble for years with no end in sight. Kotaku had reported earlier this year that the project has been bleeding cash for years and although the project has had its problems, it’s officially been confirmed by Ubisoft that it’s still in active development.

Ubisoft briefly mentioned Beyond Good and Evil 2 in a recent investor Q&A after being asked what the company has in its pipeline, to which the company replied, “This information is confidential until the games are officially announced to the gaming community. The games already known include Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora ™, Skull & Bones®, Mario + Rabbids®: Sparks of Hope, Roller Champions ™, Star Wars, Beyond Good & Evil ™ 2, the remakes of Prince of Persia®: The Sands of Time and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell®. ”

“There are also future projects for our brands, with among others Assassin’s Creed®, Far Cry®, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon®, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®, Tom Clancy’s The Division® and our investments in F2P, including XDefiant, Rainbow Six Mobile , The Mobile Division, The Heartland Division and Ghost Recon Frontline. As previously stated, Ubisoft boasts the richest game pipeline in its history for years to come. ”

Following the publisher’s comments, several sources have since said that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is indeed still in development and the game will be starting external playtesting this month. Moreover, these playtests will be more extensive than Ubisoft’s somewhat standard one-session per week tests which we’ve seen for the likes of The Division Heartland, XDefinant, and more.

Unfortunately, the information does not gauge how far well into development the game is, what problems it’s faced, and how long it will be until the project is released. At the end of 2020, game director Michel Ancel left the project to spend time on a wildlife sanctuary. One week after his departure, a French outlet, Libération, published a report that accused Ancel of toxic leadership at Ubisoft which he was being investigated.

The report also stated that Beyond Good and Evil 2 had been in development hell for 7 years, which means the game is approaching 9 years of development. Ubisoft is set to show off a new showcase event this September, but it’s unclear if the event will feature Beyond Good and Evil 2.
