Jan. 6 Committee’s Focus on Trump Raises Questions About Its Ultimate Goal

WASHINGTON — The Jan. 6 select House committee made clear in its first hearing that its main goal is showing Donald Trump was to blame for the attack on the Capitol, raising the question of what legal or political consequences the former president might face at the end of the probe.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.), Vice chairwoman of the committee, said Thursday in her opening remarks that the series of hearings this month would spell out how Mr. Trump coordinated a seven-part plan to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, an effort committee members have termed an attempted coup.
