Canoer pronounced dead after being pulled from the water at Wehrspann Lake

A 27-year-old man was pronounced dead Wednesday after his canoe capsized in Wehrspann Lake at Chalco Recreation area. First responders were called to Wehrspann Lake Wednesday evening, after getting a call that a canoe had overturned.The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says witnesses say they heard a man call out for help at the north end of the lake where they also saw an overturned canoe .He was taken to Lakeside Hospital in extremely critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, Omaha Fire / Rescue, Papillion Fire / Rescue, and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office Search / Rescue Team, responded to the incident . Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis said the man pulled from the water was not wearing a life vest. The identity of the man has not yet been released. It was the second water emergency call at Lake Wednesday. First responders were able to rescue a person earlier Wednesday. First responders said that man was wearing a life vest, which likely saved his life.
