Sacramento police identify third suspected gunman in downtown shooting

The Sacramento Police Department on Tuesday identified another suspect related to the downtown mass shooting believed to be gang-related. He is believed to be one of the shooters involved in the gun battle.Officers last week said there were at least five gunmen involved in the shooting that left six dead and 12 injured. The police department said it believes 27-year-old Mtula Payton was one of those gunmen. He is wanted on multiple felony warrants that include domestic violence and gun charges. | MORE | What we know about the 6 people killed in downtown Sacramento mass shootingWhat’s more is that police said they have evidence that brothers Smiley and Dandrae Martin, who were both arrested last week in connection with the shooting, are also believed to have been part of the shootout . There are now at least two shooters who have yet to be identified. Dandrae was the first person arrested, facing assault with a firearm and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm charges, but the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office only read the firearm charge at Dandrae’s court appearance on April 5. Even though the district attorney only presented the one charge, police then said they believed he fired a gun during the shooting. Smiley also faced weapons-related charges including possession of a machine gun. He had posted a live Facebook video of himself brandishing a handgun hours before gunfire erupted, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Smiley Martin sustained serious injuries from the shooting and is currently in a nearby hospital for treatment. He will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail once he is released from the hospital. “Our goal is to conduct as thorough an investigation as possible, so that the District Attorney has all the information she needs to present cases that will bring justice to the families of the victims and our entire community,” Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said in a release. “The investigation has moved very quickly in this first week, and it will continue until we can present prosecutors and the public with a complete picture of this terrible crime.” Daviyonne Dawson, 31, was the third person arrested in connection with the shooting, but he is not facing any charges directly related to the shooting. Dawson was seen carrying a gun “in the immediate aftermath” of the shooting downtown, according to police. Police said they do not believe the gun they recovered was used in the mass shooting.Dandrae, Smiley and Dawson are all expected back in court April 26.The police department is now on the search for Payton.
