Officer, woman in critical condition after series of crashes on US 59 southbound near Highway 90A in Sugar Land, police say

SUGAR LAND, Texas A Sugar Land police officer and a woman are in critical condition after authorities said they were involved in a chain of crashes that took place on US 59 southbound near Highway 90 Alternate Sunday morning.

Sugar Land police were initially called to a single-vehicle crash shortly before 2am where it was reported that the driver hit some type of debris on the roadway and hit an interior wall.

Officers took the driver to a nearby facility for a sobriety test. It was unknown if they suffered any injuries.

Later, an SLPD officer stayed at the scene to block the HOV lane as a wrecker truck was called to quickly remove the vehicle from the scene. That was when police said a pickup truck struck the patrol vehicle with the officer inside.

Paramedics were later called to assist the officer as he fell unconscious, according to police.

Meanwhile, as the officer was being treated, police said a woman driving a Jeep struck the pickup truck.


The police officer, the driver in the Jeep, and the driver in the pickup truck were all transported to area hospitals.

Both the police officer and the woman remain in critical condition, while the driver in the pickup truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

All lanes of US 59 southbound near Highway 90 Alternate remain closed as of 7:30 am as authorities investigate the crashes.
