MSHP investigates fatal shooting involving police in Independence

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been called to investigate a fatal shooting involving police in Independence Friday night.It happened just before 8 pm at US 24 Highway and Noland Road.Highway patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said Independence police were responding to a reported disturbance call, which possibly involved someone trying to get into a home. That’s when officers saw a white sedan traveling away from the residence at a high rate of speed.Police began pursuing that vehicle but terminated the pursuit a short time later. Lowe said the suspect’s car then crashed into another vehicle at US 24 and Noland Road. The driver of the other car was not believed to have been injured. “Then (officers) approached the suspect vehicle. They observed a weapon in the vehicle and at that point, there were shots fired towards the suspect, striking the suspect and killing him , “Lowe said.Lowe described the weapon in the vehicle as a rifle.He did not have the exact age of the man who was killed.Lowe said two other people in the white sedan were taken to hospitals. They will be interviewed later.Lowe stressed that it is still early in the investigation and that the officers involved in the shooting have not been interviewed yet.
