Toronto is just ranked as the best business city in the world for working women

Toronto is officially the largest business city for working women to live in, but there is still room for improvement.

A new analysis by Bloomberg Businessweek ranked 6ix in first place as a business city for working women. Sydney and Singapore came in second and third place respectively, while Sao Paolo was last.

The report analyzed the overall quality of life of women working in some of the world’s largest trading hubs, and cities were judged on their security, equality, mobility, wealth (determined by how much earning potential and economic independence women have) and maternity leave as leave.

Toronto scored high for equality, maternity leave, security and wealth, but not so much on its mobility score due to “traffic problems and an aging underground network.” 6ix got an overall score of 3.66 out of 5, which shows that there is still room for improvement.

Lara Zink, president and CEO of Women in Capital Markets, told the publication that despite Toronto being a “culturally diverse, dynamic and exciting city,” there is still more that can be done to achieve gender equality.

“Women are underrepresented, outdated and usually over-earned, and face a number of structural barriers in the workplace,” Zink added.

A survey conducted by Bloomberg revealed that 37% of Toronto women either agree or strongly agree that they should be treated on an equal footing with their male counterparts. In another survey, 8% of Toronto women said they engage in sexual harassment and unwanted attention every day, while a further 8.5% say they engage in it once or twice a week.

“Developments from best to worst reveal that structural and social inequalities between the sexes remain widespread,” the analysis wrote.

Toronto has been high on several lists for various categories lately. 6ix was named one of the least affordable cities to live in on the continent, but was also ranked as one of the most sought after places to live in.
